Next meetings -

           January 23, Saturday-The MBC State Board meeting will be held in Lansing.

  • February 13, Saturday, 2:00-4:00 PM at GVSU- Craig Elston, Naturalist, will present a program titled “Finding Wildflowers”. Craig has presented many excellent programs that include his beautiful wildflower photos. Be sure to attend this meeting and get ready for Spring.

  • March 12, Saturday, 2:00-4:00 PM at GVSU- Dr. Alan Steinman, Director of Annis Water Resources Institute, will present a program dealing with aquatic ecology and how the AWRI integrates education, outreach and research to enhance and preserve freshwater resources.

  • April 9, Saturday, 2:00-4:00 PM at GVSU- Caryle Spence has a special treat for us with her program on “Alaska, The Last Frontier”. Be sure to meet her and learn about Alaska's spectacular vistas, mountains, forests, waterfalls, tundra with colorful wildflowers, fjords and glaciers. This is Caryles' favorite excursion.

  • April 30, Saturday, All Day-The MBC State Spring meeting will be just one day at Hidden Lake Gardens, near Tipton, Michigan. A field trip is included. The Southeast Chapter is host.

  • May 14, Saturday, 2:00-4:00 PM- Craig Elston, Naturalist, will lead us through Hudsonville Nature Center to enjoy the many ephemeral wildflowers in this large park. This is our first field trip of 2016 and you will see large areas of wildflowers in woods and wetlands.

  • June 11, Saturday, 1:00-4:00 PM-Justin Heslinga, Stewardship Coordinator, Land Conservancy of Michigan, will take us to Saul Lake Bog Nature Preserve, near Rockford. Highlights include a tall grass prairie, interesting forests, vernal ponds, plus fern and sedge diversity. Don't miss this trip.

  • July 16, Saturday, 1:00-4:00 PM-Curtis Dykstra, Ottawa County Parks Naturalist, will provide a naturalist to explore the beauty and diversity of plants in the restored prairie and other unique areas along the Pigeon River at Hemlock Crossing County park. Be sure to come!

  • August 20, Saturday, 10AM til Noon- The Kitchel-Lindquist-Hartger dunes preserve is one of Michigan's Natural treasures. Lynne Kinkema will lead us through the sand dunes to view the rare plants that only grow in sand dunes along the Lake Michigan shore. A lovely, accessible park with paths.

  • September 2-5, Labor Day Weekend-The State MBC Foray will be headquartered at the Holiday Inn West Kalamazoo. Hosted by the Southwest Chapter, Tyler Bassett, President. More information will follow in the Arisaema.

  • September 17, Saturday, 2:00-4:00 PM-Jesse Lincoln will lead a field trip through a savanna area and prairies. Jesse will decide which one to show us and give us directions later. Be sure to save this date and join this excellent fall trip.

  • October 15, Saturday, 2:00-4:00 PM at GVSU- Judge Edward Post will present an illustrated program on “Those Amazing Birds.” Judge Post is a well known jurist in Michigan, and also has won many awards for his excellent botanical photographs. He announced that he is retiring as Ottawa County Circuit Court Judge at the end of this year after serving for 25 years. Judge Post plans to continue working as a photojournalist, studying nature and presenting programs. Don't miss this program!

  • November 15, Saturday 2:00-4:00 PM at GVSU- Bill Martinus and Chip Schaddelee will present a program on “In Search of Endemics in the USA.” These two devoted botanists have traveled through 37 states during 21 trips over the past 13 years to identify and list all endemics in a special area for many different organizations. They will go again this summer. You don't want to miss this program as you will be amazed to see the endemics Bill and Chip have found throughout the USA.

General Information About Meetings

  • Members of the public are welcome to attend meetings which are held on Saturday, September through April.
  • Unless otherwise noted, meetings start at 2:00 pm and are held in Room 1113, Kindschi Hall of Science, (next to the bookstore) Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI.
